Bob & Elizabeth's Excellent Adventure: Fun in the Sun!

Trip Background Information

Come join us in New Smyrna Beach, Florida!  NSB is located on the East Coast of FL, just a few miles south of Daytona.

In 1768, New Smyrna became the site of the largest British attempt at colonization in the New World.  settled by Dr. Adre Turnbull, this colony was named after the birthplace of his wife, Marcia, who was born in Smyrna, Turkey.  Sugar plantantions and mills were big business and ruins of such still remain today.

The Indians didn't take kindly to the British interloper and on December 25, 1835 they plundered and destroyed plantations and set fire to all the buildings in New Smyrna.  This was the beginning of the Seminole Indian War. The sugar industry was never revived in this area.  The Indians had thrived here for over 10,000 years. before the British arrival. In fact, Turtle Mound, a shell mound with layers of shells, food remains, charcoal and pottery shards, dates back to prehistoric times.

Today NSB is a thriving beach community.  The population of about 25,000 is augmented by tourists flocking to this wonderous spot.  Being close to Daytona, Bike Week is also big here.
